The Institute: Front View
Between 2002 and 2003 a needs assessment was carried out to investigate the level of ICT education programmes in Ghana. A number of organisations in Industry, Banking and Education were visited and the findings underscored the need for the development and exploitation of an Institute for Advanced ICT Studies. The organisations, including Heineken International, Ghana Breweries Ltd., The Royal Netherlands Embassy, the Public Universities in Ghana, and the Ministry of Education all supported the establishment of an Institute that covers the state-of-the-art ICT subjects on an academic and practical level and reflects the needs of industry, government, social institutes, banking, universities, and other education institutes. The Institute will complement current education programmes and will operate from a non-competitive position.
In view of plans and projects of national and international organizations with respect to the implementation, utilisation and maintenance of ICT, more and more skills and experience are needed and must become available. The present academic ICT curricula must reflect the current requirements of global ICT. Furthermore, most of the available academic programmes are concluded at the BSc level. Graduates seeking the opportunity to study at the MSc level and above in ICT-science have to leave their countries with the high risk of not returning home (brain drain).
As a result of the needs assessment, the decision was taken to realise and to establish an Institute for Advanced ICT Studies in Kumasi and governed by an Executive Council. The Executive Council comprises mainly representatives of the sponsoring organisations. Thanks to the Breweries in Ghana (Heineken and Guinness, Ghana) a building was made available for the purpose. After refurbishment, we can now boast of a modern Institute with the state-of-the-art facilities.
We are accredited by the Ghana Accreditation Board and are affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.
OUR LOCATIONThe Institute is adjacent to the Ahinsan Guinness Brewery in Kumasi, Ghana, West Africa.
